The Big Editor

When students have gained enough confidence in their writing after using I Can Write or FrameWorks, it's time to introduce them to the skills of creating their own frameworks for a piece of writing.

The Big Editor takes the facilities of the FrameWorks teachers' editor and presents them for students' use. When the program first runs, it finds all versions of FrameWorks on the hard drive:

Choose a FrameWorks program and The Big Editor will show you available frameworks: don't worry, you can lock any framework in the Frameworks editor so that Big Editor can't see it and your students don't create havoc with your files.

Here are all the unlocked Picture Prompt and Writing Prompt files. The first one – Moi – is a duplicate of the About me framework included with all versions of FrameWorks. A French teacher kindly translated the English into French using The Big Editor.

You can create a new framework or duplicate an existing one. Here we've opened The Post Office and clicked on the text at the top of the screen to change it:

Picture chooserYou can have 0, 2, 4 or 6 pictures on a page. Click a picture to open the selector dialog box.

Click the Add button to browse to a new picture.

Once you've made your choice, The Big Editor, just like the teachers' editor in I Can Write/FrameWorks, copies your choice into the frameworks folder. You can then use your new picture as many times as you like in your framework.

Changing text is just as straightforward: when you make a new page with pictures, text boxes are created under the picture placeholders. Click a box to edit it.

Writing Prompts are also easy. The top line is the title. Treat the rest of the text area like a page in Notepad and type each prompt on its own line.

You can also create sub-prompts – additional choices on the same page – as on the screen on the left. The associated word list is on the right. FrameWorks will ignore the indefinite articles and sort the words correctly.
