Shannon's Game focuses attention on spelling patterns and strategies. The game starts by presenting the first letter of a word selected from one of many wordlists – wordlists are editable and you can add your own. The user can then start making logical, sequential predictions straight away. Further visual clues are given by the letter markers showing the length of the word. Drawing on its substantial master wordlist (to which you may add words), Shannon's Game can then respond to suggestions. Sensible guesses ones which could produce a known word, even if incorrect are not penalised. So users are encouraged to develop spelling strategies based on the structure of English words. Guesses which are impossible (gv , for example) do earn a penalty which affects the size of the firework display you get at the end! Use the same program for practice in other languages: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Latin, Swedish and Gaelic are included. The on-screen keypad is editable, so you can have any Unicode accented characters either on permanent display or as pop-up extras. Any language wordlists can be defined to display the correct keypad and reference the appropriate master wordlist automatically. Shannon's Game can accommodate non-Western alphabets such as Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Greek and Urdu, although wordlists are not supplied in any language that uses these scripts. Shannon's Game is great for collaborative or competitive game play and will be equally useful with a whole class, pairs or individuals, from infants to adults.
