WordWork

What kind of things can I do with WordWork?

The two WordWork programs are designed to be used mainly by the teacher. They provide dozens of lists of words relevant to the word level requirements of Literacy Strategies.

Once you have found your list (quickly, saving you lots of preparation time) you can make use of any of 14 activities.

The displays are so large and clear that they can be seen by a class of pupils just using an ordinary monitor and are ideally suited to whiteboard use.

The activities include Hiding a word and gradually revealing it in order to concentrate on word shape. See how quickly you can spot the word! Ideal for talking about ascenders and descenders and other clues to efficient reading.

Swapping letters. The program knows which letters can be swapped for alternatives (and still make a word) in every word in every list. Get pupils to suggest letter exchanges – then check. Not surprisingly, it'll often come up with ones you, the teacher, hadn't thought of.

Inserting and deleting letters work in similar ways.

You can also compare word shapes.

Shannon's game is like Hangman – but you have to work from right to left, figuring out what the word might be. Sensible guesses (even if not right) earn no penalties. Ones which couldn't work (n following h, for example) lose you points – though we don't hang the man: that would be to much of an incentive to getting it wrong. A great activity to get pupils involved.

There is plenty more – enough to add variety and interest to the week's word level work, every week.

Sample wordlists to download

Download a list at Y1 level
This list provides 3- and 4-letter words ending in ll, ss and ff. To find these using a dictionary would be extremely laborious.

Download a list at Y2 level
This list deals with long vowel sounds. In each list, words are provided which allow the target vowel sounds to be swapped, e.g. breed and brood, creek and croak, beast and boost. It would be a very tiresome task to come up with a similar list from a dictionary.

Download a list at Y3 level
This list provides words of less than seven letters which have the doubled consonants bb, gg, ff and dd within them. It would be virtually impossible to extract such a list from a standard dictionary.
