Adam Brody says sharing a link to a teenage show with his wife Leighton Meester is “quite remarkable”

Adam brody and wife Leighton Meester may have grown up playing teenagers across the country, but sharing the same “once in a lifetime” experience of being in a teen drama made them even closer as a couple.

The couple have a “common bond,” Brody told PEOPLE, as they brought two of television’s most beloved characters to life: COby Seth Cohen and Gossip GirlIt’s Blair Waldorf.

“There are a lot of similarities there,” he says, noting that they are “all good”.

“It’s nice to be able to live such a specific and unique experience [in common]”, adds Brody.

On the West Coast, Brody played Seth Cohen, the eccentric idol, while Meester, 34, played Blair Waldorf, the “Queen B” of the Upper East Side. CO aired for four seasons from 2003 to 2007, while Gossip Girl ran for six from 2007 to 2012.

While Brody, 40, says “it doesn’t have to be” that they both performed on similar shows, it definitely adds something special to their relationship.

“Having a really unique and specific experience and having your partner go through the same thing afterwards … it’s quite remarkable,” he says.

The couple – who sea in 2014 and shares daughter Arlo Day, 5, and 2 month old baby son – continued to support each other in their acting careers.

Currently, Brody is starring in the black comedy The detective child, a thriller that follows detective prodigy Abe Applebaum (Brody), who is still working on amateur detective cases until he is approached with his first adult case to solve a small town murder.

“I just got hooked from the jump because it’s funny first and foremost, and then it’s also beautiful and surprising,” Brody told PEOPLE of the Evan Morgan-directed movie. “It touches on a lot of good things.”

While Brody admitted he wasn’t in the mysteries as a kid – “Scooby doo was the closest thing I looked at, “he teases – he says playing the man-child sleuth was” an easy, natural fit. “

Adding, “I felt really at one with him right away.”

The detective child is in theaters now.
