China advises cabin crew to wear diapers on flights at risk of coronavirus

China Civil Aviation Administration advises crews of charter flights to coronavirus hotspots wear disposable diapers rather than using the aircraft lavatory.

The notice, titled “Technical guidelines for the prevention and control of epidemics for airlines, sixth edition”, applies to charter flights to and from countries where infections exceed 500 cases per 1 million people.

The recommendation is listed in a section on personal protective equipment, which also requires crew members to wear medical masks, goggles, medical gloves, caps, shoe covers and protective clothing to prevent the spread of the virus.

Additionally, the aviation chief suggested that the cabins be divided into zones: a clean zone, a buffer zone, a seating area for passengers, a quarantine zone and an emergency quarantine zone.

Although Scientific Research and reports of the spread of coronavirus on flights vary, there are there is no evidence yet that airplane flights become superspreading events.

However, the transmission incidents have raised concerns and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans to stay home on vacation.

In September, a man flying from Dubai to New Zealand tested negative for the virus but was in fact infected and transmitted the disease to seven passengers.

In October, Irish officials said 13 of 49 passengers on a 7:30 flight in Ireland tested positive, transmitting the virus to 46 others after landing.

Although the airline industry has taken a sucker hit since the start of the pandemic, the Chinese aviation market has bounced back, according to Bloomberg.

Passenger traffic in the United States is down as cases continue to rise, forcing states to re-issue lockdown orders.

The country’s airlines carried just 33.5% of the week-to-Monday passengers they had a year earlier, Fortune reported on Tuesday.

Passenger numbers are the lowest seven-day average since late September, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
