HEC Paris dean resigns to focus on curing brain tumor

Dean of HEC Paris Peter Todd

After being diagnosed with a brain tumor 18 months ago, HEC Paris Dean Peter Todd announced today (October 5) that he will be quitting his job to focus more on his recovery. A school spokesperson said Todd Peter will be leaving HEC Paris on October 31 and an interim dean will be appointed shortly.

I intended to see this year come to an end but I find that I am not able to do so, certainly not at the level that I expect of myself and that you are entitled to expect of your dean wrote Todd, 58, in an email to his colleagues. While Todd said the tumor was benign and his chances of a full recovery were good, he and his wife, Connie, decided it would be better for his health not to serve as Dean.

“Dealing with its ongoing effects while managing the school through the complexity and stress of the Covid-19 crisis has had a personal impact that has compelled me, with Connie’s support and encouragement, to focus on my health and well-being,” added Todd. “I am making this decision knowing that the school is in fact run, not by one person, but by a management team that manages with determination and with exemplary dedication to the school. And also knowing that, for each of you, your deep commitment to the school ensures our success and that of our exceptional students.

“WE HAVE MOVED HEC PARIS FORWARD”

Born in Burnaby, Canada, Todd joined HEC Paris in July 2015 to become the school’s first non-French Dean, succeeding Bernard Ramanantsoa after a 20-year deanship. He moved to France after a nine-year stint as Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Canada. Todd had already left the position of dean at McGill and was on a one-year sabbatical when he was recruited for the position. He spent his free time with his wife thinking about the future.

“We set ourselves a course of either the west coast of North America or something in Europe,” he said. Told Poets&Quants. “I had never thought of HEC because I would never have thought that they would hire someone from abroad in what is a sacred French institution. I had heard of a few schools in Europe that were more UK based when someone from HEC literally called me out of the blue one day and said you would be interested. It went from there. »

In his message, Todd thanked his colleagues for their work over the past five years. “It has been an honor, a privilege and a deep learning experience,” he wrote. “I believe that together we have moved HEC Paris forward and I know that there is still a lot to do for this remarkable institution. Its future is in good hands, yours. I realize that my departure comes at a complicated time and in what was already planned as a year of transition.

HELD ADMINISTRATIVE ROLES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON AND MCINTIRE SCHOOL AT UVA

Todd began his academic career after earning his Ph.D. in Business Administration and Management from the University of British Columbia in 1988. He joined Queen’s University as an assistant professor and spent eight years at the school. Todd then joined the University of Houston first as a professor in 1997 before becoming associate dean for academics two years later. In 2002, he joined the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce to become associate dean of the undergraduate school’s master’s programs. He left after three years to take up the deanship at McGill.

Colleagues.

To follow up on the message you received this morning from Jean Paul Vermes, I would like to thank you all for allowing me to work alongside you over the past five years. It was an honor, a privilege and a profound learning experience. I believe that together we have moved HEC Paris forward and I know that there is still a lot to do for this remarkable institution. Its future is in good hands, yours.

I realize that my departure comes at a complicated time and in what was already planned as a year of transition. I intended to see this year come to an end but I find that I am unable to do so, certainly not at the level that I expect of myself and that you are entitled to expect of your Dean .

We have been through a lot over the past five years and I have always tried to be open and transparent with you as we have gone through complicated times and despite these complexities we have made significant progress as a school. In the interest of continued transparency, as some of you already know, I was diagnosed about 18 months ago with a brain tumour, which luckily for me is benign and treatment has so far brought under control. My long-term outlook is good. But coping with its continuing effects while managing the school through the complexity and stress of the Covid-19 crisis had a personal impact that compelled me, with Connie’s support and encouragement, to focus on my health and well-being.

I make this decision knowing that the school is in fact run, not by a single person, but by a management team that manages with determination and with exemplary dedication to the school. And also knowing that, for each of you, your deep commitment to the school ensures our success and that of our exceptional students.

I am also making this decision knowing that we are strongly supported by our Board of Directors, our International Advisory Committee, the HEC Paris Foundation, the HEC Paris Alumni Association and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as all our alumni, donors, businesses and academics. partners and friends who collectively give us strength and propel us forward.

And I take leave confident that for all you have accomplished, you are never satisfied and that, therefore, the best days for HEC Paris are those that await us.

With my warmest regards and my best wishes for the future of HEC Paris.
