Puppy from Michigan shelter will compete in Puppy Bowl XVI

CLYDE, MI — A Michigan pup is set to compete in Animal Planet’s 16th Annual Puppy Bowl.

The event has long been a hairy precursor to the NFL Super Bowl which takes place later the same day. The fluffiest line barkers and cuddliest wide retrievers will hit the grill for a playful game of terrier touchdowns, pup penalties and furry groping to help adoptable pups find forever homes.

Logan, a rescue pup from Michigan, made the final roster of 96 pup players who will face off at GEICO Stadium at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, according to a press release from Animal Planet. The pre-game show starts at 2 p.m.

Logan was one of six brothers seized from a puppy mill by St. Clair County Animal Control, according to a news release from the Blue Water Area Humane Society in Clyde, which handled the litter. All six puppies were diagnosed with sarcoptic mange. They had almost no fur when they were rescued. The boys were treated for scabies and other skin infections.

Logan and his brothers were cleared of all infections within months, the shelter said in a Facebook post announcing Logan’s participation in the Puppy Bowl. Logan and one of his brothers have since been adopted together.

Although not part of the starting roster, Logan is a member of Team Ruff wearing “Tail Mary Tangerine,” which competes in the “football game” against Team Fluff in “Bark Blue,” according to a report. head of Animal Planet.

The puppies will compete for the fan-voted BISSELL Most Valuable Puppy title, the CHEWY Lombarky Trophy and the Underdog Award, according to the Animal Planet statement.

The playing puppies are between 12 and 26 weeks old, according to the statement. They come from 61 animal shelters in the United States and Canada. Breeds featured in the game include Old English Sheepdog, Dachshund, Chihuahua, Great Dane, Mini Australian Shepherd, Shih Tzu, Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Doberman Pinscher, Siberian Husky, Rough Collie , Beagle, Corgi, Italian Greyhound, English Bulldog, Miniature American Shepherd, Pomeranian and Golden Retriever.

The game also features cheerleaders: a trio of baby pygmy goats and a trio of armadillos, according to the release. Adoptable kittens are featured during the halftime show.

Additionally, The Dog Bowl is set to return for the third year. It will feature more than 60 adoptable dogs ages 3 to 14, according to the release. The hour-long event will air on Animal Planet at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 1.

This year, Animal Planet will feature more than 150 adoptable puppies and dogs between the two games, according to the release. Since the creation of the Puppy Bowl, 100% of the puppies and kittens presented have been adopted.

A representative from the American Humane Association is on set during play to ensure the safety of all animals, according to the statement.
