Saginaw man charged with deprivation of life in dispute that led to shootings

SAGINAW, MI — Police have arrested a man accused of opening fire on another man on a Saginaw street in broad daylight.

On Sunday, January 10, officers located and arrested 29-year-old Willie Scott Jr. and took him to the Saginaw County Jail. The following day, Scott appeared before Saginaw County District Judge Randall Jurrens to be arraigned for assault with intent to murder – a life offense – carrying a concealed weapon, a felon in possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of ammunition and three counts of firearms.

Jurrens set Scott’s bond at $500,000 cash or 10%.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred at 1:18 p.m. on Jan. 5 and began at Babel Food Market, 2321 Webber St. on the east side of Saginaw, police said. Scott and his 52-year-old mother, Kaylen D. Oehring, visited the store and Scott got into an argument with another male customer, Saginaw Police Sgt. Matthew Gerow.

A 30-year-old man also entered the store and intervened in the dispute, Gerow said. Shortly after, Scott and Oehring left the store and followed the other customer who had intervened in the previous dispute, according to police.

Near Webber and Sheridan, Scott fired multiple shots with a handgun at the other customer’s vehicle, Gerow said. The driver of that vehicle took off and collided with another vehicle, Gerow said.

The man who was shot was not hit by the bullets, although his vehicle was, the sergeant said.

The attackers fled before the police arrived. Police then arrested Oehring on January 6, the same day authorities issued a warrant for Scott.

Oehring is charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearms. She is scheduled to appear for a pre-review conference on January 15, while Scott is scheduled to appear for a conference on January 19.
