The Tournament of Roses announces the cancellation of the 2021 Rose Parade

For the first time since 1945, there will be no Rose Parade.

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses announced Wednesday that there will be no Rose Parade 2021 on New Years Day. The parade traditionally accompanies the Rose Bowl, a schedule whose announced release is still in progress.

“The health and well-being of our parade participants and guests, as well as that of our volunteer members, professional staff and partners, is our number one priority,” said Bob Miller, 2021 Pasadena President. Tournament of Roses Association. “Obviously this is not what any of us wanted, and we waited to announce until we were absolutely sure that security restrictions would prevent us from continuing with planning for the 132nd Rose. Parade.”

The Rose Parade has been held on January 1 every year since 1891, except for 1942, 1943 and 1945, following World War II.

While the parade is still five months away, planning typically begins in February and building and planning floats and bands takes several months, said David Eads, executive director and CEO of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, in the Press release. He added that he believed that by canceling the parade they were helping to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association is hosting the Rose Bowl on the same day as the parade, but the release says it currently still plans to host the game. This year, the Rose Bowl is one of college football’s semifinal playoff games, but it’s most often a bowl game between the Big Ten champion and the Pac-12 champion.

“We continue to work with the College Football Playoffs and our college partners to explore what this year’s college football season will look like amid COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. While the safety and well-being of student-athletes, university staff and fans is our top priority, we remain hopeful that everyone’s grandfather will take place on New Year’s Day,” Eads said in the communicated.
